Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Who can take part in an experience with Operation Encounter?
We run adventurous outdoor activities for organised groups of young people or adults. Typically these groups come from the NCS Trust programme, schools, sports clubs, youth groups, Combined Cadet Forces (CCF) and adult sports or corporate teams. We are unable to run activities for individuals who are not part of a group.

What size of group can you accommodate?
We are flexible and can cater for different group sizes. The minimum group size is normally 30 participants We can comfortably accommodate groups of 300+.

How long does an experience last?
The shortest experience we offer is one day and typically includes three to four different activities. Beyond this we are flexible and multi-day experiences lasting five days or more.

Who will run my experience?
Your experience will be led by a team of experienced adventurous training instructors. Many are ex-military and all have at least the minimum qualifications required for the activities they are facilitating. Their job is to keep you safe, challenge, guide and instruct you, and ensure you have fun. All staff are enhanced DBS checked.

What do I need to bring with me?
The clothing and equipment you require will depend on the type and duration of experience you are undertaking. Your group leader will receive a preparation pack which includes a kit list for your experience. If you have any problems obtaining any of these items, just let your group leader or us know.

What happens if the weather is poor?
A key part of our experiences is that they take place outdoors and in any weather! Whilst the time of year will dictate the weather to some degree, we suggest you come equipped for all seasons in case there are unexpected changes. We have covered spaces for group activities and sturdy tents to keep you warm and dry at night.

What licenses and qualifications does Operation Encounter hold?
We hold a licence with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) which is part of the Heath & Safety Executive (HSE). Operation Encounter also holds a Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge. These endorsements reflect the expertise and experience of our team and the quality and safety of our delivery.

Do I need insurance?
You do not need insurance to take part in an experience. Safety is our number one priority and Operation Encounter is covered by £5m public liability insurance.
